CSIP North West Development Centre

At CSIP North West we focus on the improvement and development of regional and local health and social care services. To this end we offer evidence-based implementation support and guidance to health and social care providers from the public and increasingly the voluntary sector, that is tailored to each locality's needs. We aim to provide support that is valued by staff, organisations providing care and people using services.

Our work is arranged into four key programmes.

Mental Health (National Institute for Mental Health – NIMHE)
Social Care Programme
Health Offender Partnerships
Children, Young People and Families

We believe our work in these four key programmes of work is pragmatic yet ambitious. Activities in all four programmes include some early priority actions but we also acknowledge in each programme that we can only make progress on some issues over the long term. We are continually reviewing to help us decide future priorities and look forward to taking on new challenges as they come up.

Working in partnership
We work in partnership with a wide range of organisations in our including primary care trusts (PCTs), strategic health authorities (SHAs) , mental health trusts and voluntary sector agencies.
We will continue to develop strong partnerships with organisations and work with a wide range of stakeholders for better health and social care services.
Increasingly our work is cross cutting not just with regional and local stakeholders in health and social care but with other stakeholders, in housing and employment for example, and with other government departments on a regional basis.
Our work on local area agreements (LAAs) for example is carried out in close partnership with the Department of Communities and Local Government and its regional representatives.
We are confident that, by working with our stakeholders, we can deliver a real and lasting difference to health and social care service delivery across the North West region.

National priorities
We work within the current Government national health and social care policy framework. It is part of our remit to advise on best ways to deliver current national health and social care policy at regional and local level.

Our work on national priorities sits within the work of our four main programmes and also cross cuts between them.

Work on national priorities includes:

• a comprehensive programme to deliver race equality in mental health services
• a national programme on social inclusion
• services to give people greater access to psychological therapies
• workforce, and
• a programme to support services to measure outcomes as part of their routine practice

You can find more information about our work by reading some of our communication literature here.

Overall approach
Our overall approach at CSIP North West will always be to:
• aim to see things through the eyes of the service user
• work with stakeholders across the whole social care system to identify and deliver service improvements, focussing on practical interventions that give front line staff the time and tools to improve services
• take a system-wide perspective and work to mainstream social care issues, acknowledging the wider socio-economic issues that affect social care and well being - including social inclusion, carers' needs, employment and housing, and
• aim for short-term improvements as well as tackling long-term issues.

We will create a strong, delivery-focused approach to achieving service improvement. We will support change by engaging with people in collaborative networks, establishing a more structured sharing of information and practice, concentrating on particular areas of concern and celebrating success where appropriate.

Our development
Since the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) Development Centre was established at the beginning of 2003, and then the integration of our other CSIP partner organisations in April 2005, we have worked in line with our stakeholders needs and constantly reviewed and responded to we can best contribute to improving mental health and social care services in our region. You can find out how we do this by accessing this page.
